Sword of the Sea is a surfing adventure game developed and published by Giant Squid. It was released on August 19, 2025 for PC and PlayStation 5, and it comes from creative director Matt Nava, the artist behind Journey, ABZÛ, and The Pathless.
You play as the Wraith, a figure resurrected in a desolate Necropolis with a quest to bring back an ancient sea buried beneath the land. As you travel, sandy dunes turn into shimmering water, and schools of sea life return to the world around you.
Movement is the heart of the game. The Hoversword works like a snowboard, skateboard, and surfboard in one, so you build speed on rolling waves, catch big air, and pull off flips, spins, and grabs. Ruins are laid out like skateparks, with halfpipes, ramps, and wall rides to string tricks across.
The world flows in constant waves, from giant tides to small ripples, and spans deserts, glacial mountains, and other regions filled with secrets. A lost culture's tombs and ruins tell the story without much dialogue, and there is darkness waiting beneath the waves. It is a single-player experience.
Sword of the Sea suits players who enjoy relaxing, visually striking adventures with smooth movement, light trick-based challenges, and a strong musical score.
