The Cave is a puzzle-platform adventure game developed by Double Fine Productions and designed by Ron Gilbert. It launched in January 2013, and today the PC version is sold on Steam for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
At the start, you choose three adventurers from a cast of seven, including the Knight, the Scientist, the Monk, and the Time Traveler. You then switch between them to solve environmental puzzles while the Cave itself narrates with dry wit.
Each character has a unique ability and a personal area of the Cave tied to their backstory. Because only three can go on each trip, replaying with a different team reveals new sections and endings.
Up to three players can share the adventure in local co-op on the same screen, with each person controlling one character. Remote Play Together is also supported on Steam.
Puzzles often require two or three characters to cooperate, such as one holding a switch while another moves ahead. Ron Gilbert is known for classic point-and-click adventures such as Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion, and The Cave brings that puzzle style into a side-scrolling platform format. There is no combat and no traditional inventory screen; each character carries one item at a time. The game offers full controller support, Steam Cloud saves, and achievements. Voice acting is in English, with text in German, French, Italian, and Spanish.
It suits fans of classic adventure games, dark humor, and logic puzzles that reward experimenting with different character combinations.
Activation: The Cave keys activate on Steam and run on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Extra content: One DLC is sold separately on Steam and requires the base game.
Check that each offer is a Steam key valid in your region. For help, read how to activate your CD key, or visit the official The Cave website.
