The Hong Kong Massacre is a top-down shooter developed by the Swedish studio VRESKI. It released on January 21, 2019 for PC and PlayStation 4, followed by a Nintendo Switch version in December 2020.
The story is set in 1990s Hong Kong, before the 1997 handover. You play a former police detective out for revenge against the Triad after the death of his partner. The plot is told through conversations and cutscenes, with each of the 35 levels framed as a flashback.
Combat is fast and unforgiving. A single bullet kills you, so you rely on a slow-motion ability and a dive that makes you briefly invincible. Before each level you pick one of four weapons, a pistol, rifle, SMG, or shotgun, then clear every enemy to move on. Weapon upgrades unlock as you progress, and leaderboards track your best runs.
The game draws from John Woo films as well as games like Hotline Miami and Max Payne. Levels take place in ruined buildings, restaurant kitchens, back alleys, and rooftops. Director Chad Stahelski has said a shootout in John Wick: Chapter 4 was inspired by its top-down action.
The Hong Kong Massacre suits players who enjoy short, intense levels, trial-and-error challenge, and stylish action movie shootouts. It is single-player only and supports English.
