The Long Dark is a first-person exploration and survival game developed and published by Canadian studio Hinterland. It launched in full on August 1, 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, followed by Nintendo Switch in 2020 and native Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 versions in 2025. It also runs on macOS and Linux.

There are no zombies or monsters here. After a mysterious geomagnetic storm knocks out power across the north, you are left alone with the cold. Each day you manage warmth, calories, thirst, fatigue and injuries while you search cabins, hunt, fish, light fires and repair clothing. Wolves, bears and blizzards punish careless moves.

Survival Mode is the open-ended sandbox at the heart of the game. You pick a starting region and difficulty, then see how many days you can last. Every run creates its own stories, and permadeath makes each decision feel important.

The full game also includes WINTERMUTE, an episodic story mode that follows bush pilot Will Mackenzie and doctor Astrid Greenwood after a crash in the wilderness. It adds characters, quests and a guided introduction to the survival systems. The Long Dark is single-player only.
