The Lord of the Rings: War in the North - Legacy Edition is an updated version of the 2011 action RPG originally made by Snowblind Studios. Aspyr released it on August 11, 2026 for PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, with Switch 2 following shortly after.
The story runs alongside the events of The Lord of the Rings. A Ranger, an Elf loremaster, and a Dwarf champion travel through northern Middle-earth to stop Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean servant of Sauron gathering an army in the ruins of Fornost.
Gameplay is third-person melee and ranged combat with critical hits, abilities, and loot. Each hero levels up through a skill tree and can equip gear found along the way, and you can now hot-swap between all three characters at any time.
Co-op supports up to three players online or two in local split-screen. The Legacy Edition adds 60 FPS on modern platforms, autosave, more save slots, party health bars, improved targeting, and fixes for long-standing bugs.
Each hero fills a clear role. Eradan the Ranger fights with blades and a bow, Andriel the loremaster heals and casts spells, and Farin the Dwarf champion handles heavy melee and crossbow fire. Characters can also spot secrets such as hidden supply caches, now visible to the whole party.
It suits Tolkien fans and friends looking for a classic couch or online co-op action RPG.
PC: PC keys usually activate on Steam. The game needs Windows 11 and about 25 GB of storage.
