The Medium is a third-person psychological horror adventure developed and published by Bloober Team. It launched on January 28, 2021 for PC and Xbox Series X|S, followed by PlayStation 5 in September 2021 and a macOS version in 2023.

You play as Marianne, a medium who can see and act in the spirit world. A mysterious phone call draws her to an abandoned communist-era holiday resort in Poland, where she searches for answers about her own past and the tragedy that emptied the place.

The signature idea is dual-reality gameplay. In many scenes the screen splits in two, and you control Marianne in the physical world and the spirit world at once. Paths blocked in one reality can be open in the other, so puzzles often ask you to switch views or leave your body for a short time.

Marianne has a few spirit powers, such as a shield and a blast of energy, but the game is mostly about exploration, puzzle-solving, and avoiding a dangerous entity called the Maw. It is a single-player experience with no multiplayer modes.

The soundtrack is a collaboration between Arkadiusz Reikowski and Akira Yamaoka of Silent Hill fame. The Medium suits players who like slow, story-driven horror with puzzles more than combat.

Which version should you buy?

• PC: Most PC keys activate on Steam. The game needs 64-bit Windows 10 and about 55 GB of free storage.

• PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: Console codes are redeemed on PlayStation Network or a Microsoft account. There is no PS4 or Xbox One version.
