The Messenger is a ninja action platformer developed by Sabotage Studio and published by Devolver Digital. It was released on August 30, 2018 for PC and Nintendo Switch, followed by PlayStation 4 in March 2019 and Xbox One in June 2020.
A demon army attacks a village, and a young ninja is sent out with a scroll that his clan's survival depends on. The early hours play like a classic linear action platformer. You run, jump, and slash through stages, and a move called Cloudstep lets you jump again in midair every time you strike an enemy or object.
Partway through, the game changes direction. Time travel enters the story, the visuals shift between 8-bit and 16-bit styles, and the world opens into an interconnected Metroidvania map. Moving between past and future changes the layout of each area and opens new paths.
Along the way, you buy upgrades from a sarcastic shopkeeper, learn new abilities, find hidden levels, and take on boss fights. The writing is full of humor, and the chiptune soundtrack by Rainbowdragoneyes has separate 8-bit and 16-bit versions of each track. The game is single-player.
The Messenger suits fans of retro ninja games and Metroidvanias who want tight controls and a story with a few surprises. It also runs on very modest PC hardware.
PC: PC keys usually activate on Steam.
Consoles: Switch, PS4, and Xbox One codes are redeemed on the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Network, or a Microsoft account.
DLC: Picnic Panic is a free story expansion added after launch, so it does not need a separate key.
Before you buy, check the activation platform and region on each offer, then follow our guide on how to activate your CD key. For more details, see the official The Messenger website.
