The Mortuary Assistant is a first-person horror game developed by DarkStone Digital and published by DreadXP. It was released on PC on August 2, 2022. A Definitive Edition update arrived alongside versions for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One on August 2, 2024, and the game is also available on Nintendo Switch.

You play Rebecca Owens, a newly qualified mortician's apprentice at River Fields Mortuary. Called in late one night to handle some embalmings, she soon learns that something is wrong with the bodies and with her, and that she cannot simply leave.

The work itself is the gameplay. You check in bodies, perform detailed embalming steps, and handle jobs around the mortuary, all while strange events build up around you. To survive, you use occult rituals and clues to work out which demon has latched onto you, then banish it before it takes control.

A randomized system changes the demons, scares, and clues on each playthrough, so no shift plays out the same way. The story unfolds over multiple runs, revealing more about Rebecca and the mortuary's past, and the game offers more than 10 hours of content with multiple endings. It is single-player only.

It suits horror fans who like slow-burn tension, hands-on procedural tasks, and a mystery that rewards repeat playthroughs.
