The Room VR: A Dark Matter is a puzzle adventure game developed and published by Fireproof Games, the UK studio behind The Room series, which began on iPad in 2012. It was released on March 26, 2020 for PC VR through Steam and is also available on PlayStation VR, PlayStation VR2, and Meta Quest.
The story begins at the British Institute of Archaeology in London, 1908. An esteemed Egyptologist has disappeared, and a police investigation leads you into cryptic locations and an otherworldly discovery that blurs reality and illusion.
Unlike the earlier touchscreen entries, this chapter was designed from the ground up for virtual reality. You reach out with motion controllers to inspect objects, turn dials, open hidden compartments, and work out how intricate contraptions fit together. Objects can be picked up, turned over, and examined from every angle.
Puzzles are tactile and layered, and solving one device often reveals the next clue. The game is single-player and paced for careful exploration rather than action.
It suits puzzle fans, players of The Room series, and VR owners looking for a calm, atmospheric mystery. No earlier Room game is needed to follow the story. A VR headset is required on every platform.
PC VR: PC keys usually activate on Steam and need a SteamVR or Oculus PC compatible headset. The game is VR only.
PlayStation: PS4 codes work with PlayStation VR. Fireproof lists the PlayStation VR2 version as an upgrade for PS4 owners.
Meta Quest: The standalone Quest version is sold on the Meta store and is not a Steam key.
