Tom Clancy's The Division is an online open-world action RPG and third-person shooter developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. It was released on March 8, 2016 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and it started the looter shooter series that continued with The Division 2.
The story begins after a smallpox outbreak spread through banknotes on Black Friday collapses New York. You play as an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division, a sleeper unit activated to restore order in a snowbound Midtown Manhattan overrun by gangs and armed factions.
Combat is cover-based and tactical. You complete story missions and side activities, level up your agent, and collect weapons and gear with stats, talents, and gear sets. A Base of Operations unlocks medical, tech, and security wings that give you new skills such as turrets, seeker mines, and healing stations.
The game supports up to four-player online co-op for missions and open-world play. The Dark Zone is a walled-off PvPvE area where players fight AI enemies for contaminated loot, then must extract it by helicopter while other players can turn rogue and steal it. Expansions added Underground, Survival, and Last Stand modes.
The Division suits players who like squad-based shooters, gear grinding, and a detailed, atmospheric city to explore. Players who want the newer setting and systems can also look at Tom Clancy's The Division 2.
PC: PC keys activate on Ubisoft Connect or on Steam, and Steam copies still launch through Ubisoft Connect.
PS4 and Xbox One: Console codes redeem on PlayStation Network or a Microsoft account, and both versions also play on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Editions: The Gold Edition adds the Season Pass with the Underground, Survival, and Last Stand expansions.
