Like other Total War games, it splits play into two layers. On the turn-based campaign map you manage provinces, trade, religion, diplomacy and armies, then you fight battles in real time with thousands of soldiers on the field.

The setting is the late 4th and 5th centuries, a dark period of famine, plague and a cooling climate.
