Transistor is a sci-fi action RPG developed and published by Supergiant Games, the studio behind Bastion and Hades. It released on May 20, 2014 for PC and PlayStation 4, with versions for macOS, Linux, and Nintendo Switch following later.
You play as Red, a famous singer in the city of Cloudbank who has lost her voice. After an attack by a mysterious group, she ends up with the Transistor, a talking sword that holds the voice of a man who tried to save her. Together they fight through the city against the Process, robotic forces reshaping Cloudbank.
Combat blends real-time action with a planning mode called Turn(). You can freeze time, queue up a sequence of moves and attacks, then watch Red carry them out in a burst. After that, she needs a moment to recover, so timing and positioning matter.
The Transistor's abilities are called Functions. Each one can be used as an active skill, an upgrade to another skill, or a passive bonus, which allows thousands of combinations. Limiters let you raise the difficulty for extra rewards, and Recursion mode offers new battles after the story. The game is single-player.
Transistor suits players who enjoy stylish action RPGs, tactical combat, and atmospheric storytelling, with hand-painted art and a soundtrack by Darren Korb that reacts to the action.
PC and Mac: Most PC keys activate on Steam, and the Steam version supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. It needs only about 3 GB of storage.
Consoles: PS4 codes are redeemed on PlayStation Network and Switch codes on the Nintendo eShop. The PS4 version also plays on PS5.
Soundtrack: The Original Soundtrack is sold as separate DLC and does not include the game.
