A Windows 10 Pro OEM key is a license for the professional edition of Windows 10, sold under OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) terms. OEM licenses are designed for system builders and are usually much cheaper than retail licenses, which is why they are popular for custom-built and refurbished PCs.
The main limitation of OEM licensing is that it is tied to the first PC it activates, specifically the motherboard. If you replace the motherboard or move to a new computer, the license generally cannot be transferred. Retail licenses cost more but can be moved to a different PC.
Windows 10 Pro includes everything in Home plus business and power-user features. These include BitLocker drive encryption, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V virtualization, Group Policy management, Windows Sandbox, and the ability to join an Active Directory domain or Azure AD (now Microsoft Entra ID).
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, with paid Extended Security Updates available for organizations and a limited consumer option. A Windows 10 Pro key can generally be used to activate Windows 11 Pro on eligible hardware, so if your PC meets Windows 11 requirements, upgrading is the safer long-term choice.
