Windows Server 2019 Standard is the mainstream edition of Microsoft's Windows Server 2019, released in October 2018 on the Long-Term Servicing Channel. It is a long-running workhorse for small and mid-sized businesses that need a reliable server for everyday infrastructure.
Common roles include Active Directory domain controllers, file and print servers, DNS and DHCP, web hosting with IIS, and running line-of-business applications. Windows Server 2019 added Windows Admin Center for browser-based management, Storage Migration Service for moving from older servers, System Insights for predictive analytics, and improved support for containers and hybrid connections to Azure.
Standard edition is licensed per core, with a minimum of 16 core licenses per server. A fully licensed server can run Windows Server on the physical host plus up to two virtual machines with Hyper-V. Organizations that need many virtual machines, Storage Spaces Direct, or Shielded VMs should look at the Datacenter edition instead.
Users or devices that connect to the server need Windows Server CALs. Microsoft's mainstream support for Windows Server 2019 ended on January 9, 2024, and extended support with security updates continues until January 9, 2029. It remains a good fit where your software is certified for 2019, while new long-term deployments may be better on Windows Server 2025.
