Windows Server 2022 Essentials is an edition of Microsoft’s server operating system built for small organisations with relatively straightforward IT requirements. It can be used to run essential network services, manage user access, centralise files and support business applications on a local server. The Essentials licence covers up to 25 users and 50 devices without requiring separate Windows Server Client Access Licences, which can simplify licensing for qualifying small deployments. Windows Server 2022 Essentials is restricted to one physical CPU socket and up to 10 processor cores, so it is not designed for large or highly virtualised server estates. It also provides limited virtualisation rights. Before purchasing a Windows Server 2022 Essentials key, check the retailer’s licensing channel, region and hardware compatibility, as this edition is commonly provided through OEM licensing.
Intended for small businesses with a maximum of 25 users and 50 devices.
Does not require separate Windows Server Client Access Licences for permitted users and devices.
Supports a single physical CPU socket with a maximum of 10 processor cores.
Can be deployed to provide centralised user access, file storage, networking and server-based business services.
Offers limited virtualisation rights: one physical operating-system environment and one virtual operating-system environment on the licensed server.
If both permitted instances run at the same time, the physical instance may only be used to run hardware virtualisation software or provide hardware virtualisation services.
Designed as a cloud-connected first-server option for qualifying small-business environments.
Essentials licence limits cannot be expanded by adding Client Access Licences; organisations exceeding the limits should assess Windows Server Standard instead.
