Windows Server 2025 Standard is Microsoft's mainstream server operating system, released on November 1, 2024, and built on the same codebase as Windows 11 version 24H2. It is designed for physical servers and light virtualization in small and mid-sized organizations.
Common uses include file and print sharing, Active Directory domain services, DNS and DHCP, application and web hosting, and running line-of-business software. Windows Server 2025 adds improvements such as hotpatching for supported Azure Arc-connected servers, SMB over QUIC for secure file access without a VPN, faster NVMe storage performance, GPU partitioning, and updated Active Directory features.
Standard edition is licensed per core, with a minimum of 16 core licenses per server. A fully licensed server can run the operating system on the physical host plus up to two virtual machines. If you need unlimited virtualization or advanced storage features, Windows Server 2025 Datacenter is the edition to look at.
Client Access Licenses (CALs) are also required for users or devices that connect to the server, and Remote Desktop Services needs separate RDS CALs. Microsoft's mainstream support for Windows Server 2025 runs into late 2029, with extended support after that.
