Windows Server 2019 Datacenter is the most complete edition of Microsoft's 2019 server operating system, purpose-built for organizations running dense virtualization or hyper-converged infrastructure. It shares the same underlying platform as Windows Server 2019 Standard, including Active Directory, DNS, and Group Policy, but adds exclusive capabilities aimed at scaling compute, storage, and network isolation across large host clusters.
The defining advantage of this edition is unlimited server virtualization rights, letting organizations run as many virtual machines as their licensed physical cores can support, once every core on a host is properly covered. This makes it well-suited for environments that treat physical hosts as compute shells for dense hypervisor clusters rather than standalone servers.
Datacenter-exclusive features not found in Standard include Shielded Virtual Machines with Host Guardian Service for protecting VMs from compromised hosts, Storage Spaces Direct for cost-efficient software-defined storage, and Software-Defined Networking for advanced network virtualization at scale. Storage Spaces Direct runs directly in the server kernel rather than as a virtual machine, supporting clusters of two to sixteen servers with large raw storage capacity, and also underpins Microsoft Azure Stack HCI deployments.
Licensing follows a per-core model, similar to Standard, but the unlimited virtualization benefit only applies once every physical core across all hosts in a cluster is fully licensed. This edition suits enterprises, hosting providers, and organizations building private cloud or hybrid infrastructure integrated with Azure or AWS. Mainstream support for this release ended January 9, 2024, with extended support continuing until January 9, 2029.
Unlimited virtualization rights – Run unlimited virtual machines once all host cores are properly licensed.
Storage Spaces Direct – Delivers software-defined, hyper-converged storage running directly in the server kernel.
Shielded Virtual Machines – Protects VMs from compromised host administrators using Host Guardian Service.
Software-Defined Networking – Enables advanced network virtualization for large-scale datacenter environments.
Hyper-converged infrastructure support – Combines compute and storage on the same physical hosts for efficiency.
Hybrid and multi-cloud integration – Supports blending with Azure or AWS for federated identity and policy enforcement.
Improved cluster resilience – Includes enhanced cluster awareness and faster failover capabilities.
Container and Nano Server support – Enables lean, container-style deployments for faster provisioning.
