Aeterna Noctis is a 2D action platformer in the Metroidvania style, developed and self-published by Spanish studio Aeternum Game Studios. It launched in December 2021. The story begins with Chaos, the supreme god, who curses the rebellious leaders of his creation as the King of Darkness and the Queen of Light and condemns them to fight forever. You play the King of Darkness on a journey to recover the powers he has lost.
The world is split into 16 interconnected zones that open up as you gain new movement and combat abilities. Combat is fast and responsive, and boss fights demand pattern reading, but the game is best known for its precision platforming, which gets very demanding in later areas. Two modes let you choose the challenge: Aeterna mode focuses difficulty on action, while Noctis mode adds harder platforming sections. All art and animation are hand-drawn frame by frame, cutscenes are voice-acted in eight languages, and the soundtrack has more than 40 tracks. A free DLC added more enemies, bosses and areas.
If you enjoyed Hollow Knight or the punishing combat of Blasphemous, an Aeterna Noctis CD key is a cheap way to get one of the hardest modern Metroidvanias. See the official Aeterna Noctis website for more.
