APICO is a casual beekeeping simulation game developed by TNgineers and published by Whitethorn Games. It released on May 20, 2022 for PC, Mac, and Linux, followed by Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The game uses a colorful pixel art style and is fully playable at your own pace.
You leave a dull city job and return to your family home in Port APICO to restart its beekeeping tradition. Each day you gather resources, build hives and apiaries, and look after colonies as they grow. There are no combat sections or bee stings, and there is no pressure to rush, so you can play in short, calm sessions.
The core system is bee breeding. By cross-breeding species you discover more than 45 new bees, each with its own traits. You also craft habitats for solitary bees, catch butterflies, and make honey and other products to sell. Breeding uses simple biology ideas, so you learn which pairings produce rare bees by testing different combinations.
Progress opens new biomes with their own species to find, and helps you repopulate lost bees and release them into the wild. The PC version supports online co-op for up to four players, and players can extend the game with mods. There is also a storyline to follow as you uncover the forgotten secrets of the APICO islands.
APICO suits fans of cozy farming and crafting games who enjoy collecting, experimenting, and a slow, sting-free pace. The developers also donate a portion of their income to bee conservation causes.
