Chants of Sennaar is a puzzle adventure game developed by French studio Rundisc and published by Focus Entertainment. It launched on September 5, 2023 and earned a Metacritic score of 86 on PC. The game won Best Indie Game at the 2024 New York Game Awards and received nominations at The Game Awards and the BAFTA Games Awards. Inspired by the Myth of Babel, it sends you up a vast tower whose five Peoples no longer speak to each other.
You play as the Traveler, and language is the core puzzle. There is no translation menu: you watch how people act, listen to what they say, and log every unknown glyph in your notebook. Once you gather enough context, you assign meanings to symbols and the notebook confirms correct sets. Each of the five languages works differently, and later puzzles ask you to act as a translator between groups. Every floor has its own architecture, culture and technology, drawn in a flat style inspired by European comics, with a lyrical soundtrack by Thomas Brunet.
