DOOM is a first-person shooter developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. It was released on May 13, 2016 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and came to Nintendo Switch on November 10, 2017. It reboots the classic series with a modern take on its fast, aggressive combat.

You play as the Doom Slayer, who wakes up inside a Union Aerospace Corporation facility on Mars after a demonic invasion. The campaign takes you through industrial complexes, research labs, and the depths of Hell as you work to close the portal.

Combat rewards constant movement. Instead of hiding behind cover, you push forward and use glory kills, close-range finishers on staggered enemies, to recover health. The chainsaw gives extra ammo, and weapon mods, Praetor Suit upgrades, and rune trials let you tune your playstyle.

Beyond the campaign, DOOM offers online player-versus-player multiplayer and SnapMap, an editor for building and sharing your own maps and modes, including co-op games for up to four players. Arcade Mode adds score-based replays of campaign missions.

DOOM suits players who enjoy fast shooters, heavy metal atmosphere, and skill-based combat. It also works as an entry point, since no knowledge of the older DOOM games is needed. Its direct sequel is DOOM Eternal.

Which version should you buy?

• PC: Most PC keys activate on Steam. The current Steam version includes the three premium multiplayer DLC packs.

• Consoles: PS4, Xbox One, and Switch codes are redeemed on PlayStation Network, a Microsoft account, or the Nintendo eShop. The Switch version does not include SnapMap.

• Sequel: The story continues in DOOM Eternal, which is sold separately.
