Eastward is a story-driven action-adventure game with RPG elements, made by Shanghai-based indie studio Pixpil and published by Chucklefish. It launched on September 16, 2021 for Windows, macOS and Nintendo Switch. The game holds a Metacritic score of 82 on PC.
In a near-future world, a toxic miasma has wiped out most of the population and pushed survivors into underground towns. You follow John, a quiet, hardworking miner, and Sam, a young girl with strange powers, as they escape the subterranean society of Potcrock Isle and travel across the decaying continent by rail. Along the way you explore bustling towns, campsites and forests, meet an eccentric cast and cook meals from odd ingredients that grant health and stat boosts.
Combat and puzzles hinge on switching between the two leads. John swings a frying pan or uses tools like a flamethrower and cog-shooter, while Sam stuns enemies with a kinetic blast. You can split the duo to reach hidden paths in dungeons. The soundtrack is by Joel Corelitz. An Eastward CD key unlocks the Steam version, and the Octopia DLC adds a separate farming-life adventure starring the same pair. The game contains adult humor and some mature themes.
