Empires of the Undergrowth is a real-time strategy game with base-building, developed by Slug Disco and published by Hooded Horse together with the studio. After a long Early Access run, the full release launched on Steam on June 7, 2024 for Windows and macOS. It puts the RTS genre under the microscope: your army is an ant colony, and your base is a nest you dig yourself.
Every match starts from a central chamber that holds your queen. You order workers to dig through a hex-based maze of soil and bedrock, build store rooms and nurseries, and haul food back underground. On the surface, seeds, nectar, fungus, other insects and even amphibians are all on the menu, but each source carries its own risks. Night raids for food can pay off or wipe out your foragers, and by morning you may be storming a rival colony to kill its queen.
Combat runs through pheromone groups: you assign nurseries to groups and steer them with markers and rules of engagement. Species play very differently, from trap-jaw ants that leap back to heal to wood ants that fire formic acid as artillery. Fans of the publisher's Against the Storm will find a similar focus on hard economic trade-offs. An Empires of the Undergrowth CD key unlocks the game on Steam.
Patch notes and community links are on the official Empires of the Undergrowth website.
