Heretic + Hexen is a remastered collection of two spell-casting first-person shooters that Raven Software built on a modified DOOM engine in 1994 and 1995. The restoration comes from Nightdive Studios and id Software, with Bethesda Softworks publishing it on August 7, 2025. Those early games introduced inventory systems, vertical aiming and, in Hexen, distinct character classes, features that shaped first-person action for years.
The package includes Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic and Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, plus two new episodes made by id Software and Nightdive: Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur. That adds up to 117 campaign maps and 120 deathmatch maps. Modern additions include cross-platform online co-op and deathmatch for up to 16 players, local split-screen for up to 8, an in-game mod browser, a toggleable soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult and multithreaded rendering up to 4K and 120 FPS. The Steam version also ships the original DOS releases.
It suits retro shooter fans and anyone who enjoyed id's work, from DOOM 3: BFG Edition onward. A Heretic + Hexen CD key is a cheap way to own both classics. See the official Steam page for the full feature list.
