Hotline Miami is a top-down action shooter developed by Dennaton Games and published by Devolver Digital. It was released on October 23, 2012 for PC, then came to macOS, Linux, PlayStation 3, PS Vita, and PlayStation 4. Later releases on Switch, Xbox, and newer consoles are part of the Hotline Miami Collection.
The story is set in an alternate Miami in 1989. A silent hitman receives cryptic messages on his answering machine, puts on an animal mask, and attacks the city's criminal underworld. The plot becomes stranger and more surreal across the game's 19 chapters.
Every level is a building full of armed enemies, and both you and they die in one hit. You kick doors, grab weapons, and clear rooms in seconds, restarting instantly when you fail. Success depends on planning a route, then executing it with fast reflexes.
Before each chapter you choose a mask that grants a perk, such as extra speed or a starting weapon. A score system rewards style and speed, and the synth-heavy soundtrack became one of the most celebrated in indie games.
Hotline Miami is single-player and suits players who enjoy hard, fast action and trial and error. It contains strong graphic violence.
PC, Mac, and Linux: Most PC keys activate on Steam. The game runs on almost any computer and needs only about 250 MB of storage.
Consoles: PS4 codes redeem on PlayStation Network. On Switch and Xbox, the game is sold as Hotline Miami Collection with its sequel.
Sequel: Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is a separate game, so check whether a listing covers one game or both.
