Metro Awakening is a first-person survival shooter built only for virtual reality. It was developed by Vertigo Games and released on November 7, 2024 for PC VR headsets through Steam, PlayStation VR2 on PlayStation 5, and Meta Quest 2 and 3.
The story is set in 2028, in the subway tunnels beneath a post-nuclear Moscow. You play as Serdar, a doctor searching for his wife and the medicine she needs. The script comes from Metro creator Dmitry Glukhovsky and tells a supernatural origin story for a character fans of the series will recognize.
Gameplay follows the series' tense survival style. You physically wipe your gas mask, swap filters, wind your flashlight, and reload hand-made weapons with your own hands. Ammo is scarce, so sneaking past bandits and mutants is often smarter than fighting them. Supernatural sections blur the line between the living and the dead, adding a horror tone to the familiar tunnel crawling.
Metro Awakening is a single-player campaign with no multiplayer. Stealth, combat, and exploration are all paced around the limits of your air, light, and ammo. It suits VR owners who enjoy slow, atmospheric shooters and players who already know Metro Exodus and the earlier Metro games.
PC VR: Most PC keys activate on Steam. You need a compatible headset such as Meta Quest 2 or 3, Valve Index, or HTC Vive.
PS5: Console codes are redeemed on PlayStation Network and require a PlayStation VR2 headset.
Editions: A Standard Edition and a Deluxe Edition are sold, and a Deluxe Upgrade is available on Steam.
