The story opens after four members of a secret order, the Penta Nera, are murdered and their souls taken by Devourers. The surviving fifth member summons another Devourer for revenge. You play this demon, who can absorb several souls and bring them back as puppets. Your party is built from these devoured characters, and you can switch between them in battle, each with a different combat style.
A core mechanic is moving between two worlds: the mortal realm and a darker shadow world with its own enemies and mystic puzzles. Choices affect how the story plays out.
