The Evil Within is a third-person survival horror game developed by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda Softworks. Directed by Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil, it was released in October 2014 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
You play as Detective Sebastian Castellanos, who arrives at a bloody crime scene at a psychiatric hospital and is pulled into a distorted world full of grotesque creatures. The story twists between reality and nightmare, and the setting shifts from villages and forests to hospitals and ruined cities.
Resources are tight. Ammo, health items, and crafting parts are limited, so you often need to sneak past enemies, use the environment, or burn fallen foes with matches before they rise again. The Agony Crossbow fires different bolt types, and you can disarm traps to collect parts for new bolts.
Between chapters, you visit a safe haven where green gel collected in the world can be spent to upgrade health, stamina, weapons, and carrying capacity. Tough boss encounters and memorable enemies like the Keeper test those upgrades.
The Evil Within is a single-player game. It suits players who like classic, tense survival horror where careful play and resource management matter more than fast action.
PC: PC keys activate on Steam. The game needs a 64-bit system and 50 GB of free space for installation.
Consoles: PS4 and Xbox One codes are redeemed on PlayStation Network or a Microsoft account. Xbox One discs and downloads also run on Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility.
DLC: The Season Pass adds The Assignment, The Consequence, and The Executioner. It is sold separately and needs the base game.
