The story is set in Arkham, Massachusetts, during the late 1920s, as a supernatural flood swallows the city. A ritual gone wrong has trapped the soul of the woman you love in the Dreamlands, and you must reach the source of the flood to save her.

Compared with the first game, the focus shifts toward survival horror. Ammo and supplies are limited, your inventory needs managing, and unlocked shortcuts help you return to safe spots to rearm and upgrade. You move through flooded districts on foot and by skiff.

Enemies include the Slither, which animate the dead, Deep Ones that rise from the water, and Shadows that bend space. An optional investigation system offers puzzles that unlock lore, secrets and upgrades.

It is a single-player game for fans of Lovecraftian fiction and slower, tense horror where planning matters as much as aim.

Combat and exploration are tied together, since some threats are best avoided until you have upgraded your weapons or found a better route. The flood also changes locations as the story progresses, so familiar streets can become new paths or new dangers when you return later in the campaign.
