Under The Waves is a narrative-driven adventure developed by French studio Parallel Studio and published by Spotlight by Quantic Dream, the publishing label of the studio behind Detroit: Become Human. It released on August 28, 2023. The story follows Stan, a professional diver working an extended mission at the bottom of the North Sea in an alternate, techno-futuristic 1979, while he struggles with a life-changing loss.
Gameplay mixes exploration, light survival and storytelling. You pilot Stan's submarine across the seabed, then leave it to swim through caves, wrecks and underwater plant life in his special wetsuit. Along the way you collect salvageable waste, backstory pieces and materials, and craft equipment that lets you reach deeper areas. As Stan withdraws into solitude, strange events start to blur the line between memory and reality, pushing the story toward a difficult final choice. Marine wildlife is his only company, and an atmospheric soundtrack carries the slower, contemplative pace.
Under The Waves suits players who prefer story and atmosphere over combat. An Under The Waves CD key activates on Steam, which lists full controller support and 21 interface languages. Console versions are sold on PlayStation and Xbox stores.
