Book of Demons is a hack and slash action RPG developed and published by Polish studio Thing Trunk, fully released on Steam on December 13, 2018 with a Metacritic score of 72. It is the first entry in Return 2 Games, a series of mid-core titles inspired by the early days of PC gaming. The game is part tribute and part parody of classic dungeon crawlers, drawing on the dark mood of the first Diablo. Fans of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction will recognize the setup: descend into the dungeons below the Old Cathedral and stop the Archdemon. Here, though, the whole world, called Paperverse, exists inside a pop-up book.
Items, spells and skills all take the form of cards. It is not a card game, but adapting your hand to each fight is the core strategy, and cards can be upgraded with runes or found as rare and legendary variants. Movement and combat are simplified, so timing and card choice matter more than fast clicking as you remove shields, dodge spells and clear poison. The Flexiscope system lets you choose the length of each quest and learns your pace to predict session times. Procedurally generated dungeons, 70+ monster types, a permadeath Roguelike mode and Freeplay difficulty levels add replay value.
A Book of Demons CD key suits players who want a dungeon crawler that fits short or long sessions. A campaign with one class takes about 10 hours, according to the developer. More information is on the Return 2 Games website.
Card-Based Hack and Slash: Items, spells and skills are cards, so building and adapting your hand replaces traditional weapon loadouts.
Flexiscope Sessions: Choose how long each quest lasts, and the game learns your pace to estimate the time for your next session.
Paperverse Setting: A world inside a pop-up book that pays tribute to, and pokes fun at, the first Diablo.
Procedural Dungeons: Randomly generated levels below the Old Cathedral with more than 70 monster types, each with its own traits.
Roguelike Mode: Permadeath, restricted healing and extra obstacles for players who want a harder challenge.
Endgame Depth: Freeplay difficulty levels, Quests, monthly and all-time leaderboards and 200+ achievements.
Comfort Features: Points of interest appear at the top of the screen and your footprints mark visited paths, so you rarely need the map.
