Umbraclaw is a 2D action adventure developed and published by INTI CREATES, the Japanese studio behind many side-scrolling action games. The PC version launched on Steam on May 30, 2024. You play as Kuon, a house cat who dies in the mortal world and awakens in the Soulplane, a realm of the dead. Her goal is to find a way through the Boundary and return home to her owner.
The core idea is risk. Any single hit kills Kuon instantly, but her Anima Revive power brings her back by absorbing the soul of another animal, granting a new skill each time. Those skills make her stronger and can even unlock a humanoid form, yet she can revive only nine times, so every death is both a setback and an upgrade. The underworld is drawn in a paper cut-out art style, and the story branches into multiple endings based on your actions and choices.
Umbraclaw suits players who enjoy tight, punishing platform action with a strong narrative hook. A Umbraclaw CD key activates on Steam, which lists full controller support and Steam Cloud saves. The game is also sold on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
More details are on the official Umbraclaw website.
One-Hit Deaths: Kuon is a mortal cat, so any damage in the Soulplane kills her instantly.
Anima Revive: Each death absorbs another animal's soul and grants Kuon a new skill, turning failure into progress.
Nine Lives Limit: Kuon can revive only nine times, which raises the stakes of every run through the underworld.
Humanoid Transformation: Kuon can take a humanoid form for extra power, with consequences tied to the story.
Paper Cut-Out Art: Hand-drawn enemies and environments use a paper cut-out style created by the INTI CREATES art team.
Multiple Endings: Your actions and choices lead Kuon's story to different conclusions.
Japanese and English Voice Acting: Steam lists full audio in English and Japanese, with text in eight more languages.
